STATEMENT

My work is motivated by care and a desire to make space for public imagination. I’m interested in how provisional solutions can create a sense of belonging. This can look like on-the-fly audio descriptions, live captions, ad-hoc structures, and rearrangements of furniture.

My materials and methods are reflexive. I gravitate toward lo-fi mechanisms—such as reel-to-reel tape loops, transistor radios, photocopiers, and electronic synthesizers—because they reveal electromagnetic frequencies all around us. Their fluttering textures are like our complex embodiments, sensed differently by every being, from every position, in every moment.

The things I make are meant to invite connection, drift, rest, and a relinquishment of clock time. When all these factors converge, it’s ecstatic magic.

Into the Ground, Into the Body

JUSTIN LOOPER COLLABORATION
BOSTON PUBLIC ART TRIENNIAL ACCELERATOR PROJECT
EGLESTON SQUARE BRANCH OF THE BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY

This project offers a somatic experience for the public to engage with sound across the senses through visualizations, vibration, and transference. Visitors are invited to activate sonic frequencies that resonate through the back of a bench and generate waveforms in a water fountain, both of which are made from recycled 55-gallon steel barrels.

Into the Ground, Into the Body, uses inaudible frequencies to incite restoration and healing while simultaneously decentering hearing experience.
